When to Take the Upcard in Rummy Games?

When to Take the Upcard --- Discarding Tips --- When to Knock --- Playing the Score or Keeping Under --- Reading the Discards

The simple answer is it should be obvious if it will fill a meld! It is more of a problem when you know that the card will not give you a meld.

The best way to help or guide a rummy player about when and when not to take the upcard is by presenting a set of rules..and guidlines:

- If you are holding a very weak combination and the upcard presents you with the possible 3 or 4 way combination, by all means take it and use it.

- By taking the upcard you have the added advantage of puzzling your opponent.g You can be giving away a chance to pick a really helpful card by taking a slightly helpful one. This may confuse your opponent and also reduce her chance of improving her hand.

- If the upcard is an ace, you should always take it unless you have a perfect gin hand and the ace is absolutely useless to you.
